Black Intelligence

Youtube video of the day: Makes me happy to be black

I think the reason this young man is so excited to see another brother speak an Asian language is because of the negative portrayal of black intelligence. Notice how excited he is to hear and see this brother on the TV. I can't lie my heart skipped a beat too. For those of us who have spent a number of years in this country, you have to make an effort(we call it becoming conscious) to not believe the hype.

Yeah, it's cool and all... Unfortunately, this guy and another guy who are regularly featured on Japanese TV are always portrayed as buffoons--rather like modern day Stepehen Fetchits.

The Japanese typically distinguish between Africans and African-Americans--once they learn of the country of origin.

While the Japanese have tremendous respect for African Americans and their civil rights struggle in America, the Japanese have a habit of looking down on other peoples from poorer nations (especially other Asians and including Africans) and these peoples are usually looked at as less intelligent, less cultured and comedic.

Unfortunately.

Black people are everywhere and we can do everything. You're right that a lot of us assume that we're limited because of what they see on tv.

You know Condoleeza was able to climb that political ladder so efficiently, in part, because she's fluent in Russian. Kinda comes in handy when the country was knee deep in the cold war.

I agree with dmb that the Japanese see him as buffoon as they do with the other dude they post at youtube.....Unlike the Europeans they are not up-front racist.

I am yet to visit Japan, but I learned the language and studied the culture for years. from my understanding, there are a good number of Blacks in Japan of varied origin and they do well over there.

Quite a few blacks in Japan are in the entertainment industry. Anyway, my experiences with Japanese folks have always been pleasant and they have always shown tremendous respect for my heritage and culture (Nigerian). I did shock the heck out of an elderly Japanese man in a Japanese bookstore in NJ. He almost fell when I spoke to him in Japanese. lol!

@ Beauty: Happy New Year. Back at school yet? Take it easy.

If you want a more interesting examples of black people speaking "unexpected" languages, check this out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15uKle6Z1jQ. Or this liberian singer in China:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ba7SzoX2Mr4.

This is not SO amazing. I think what's amazing is the commenter. Where has he been? I spent over 20years in the military and myself and almost eveyone I hung out with spoke either German or Korean.

Besides that the guy that's talking in the background needs to comment on what an idiot the black dude is made to be in on that show, sheesh!!

I agree with anonymous and of course, DMB. I would like to add however that the real surprising thing about this video is the English speaking commentator. I mean, is he from another planet? Of course Black people speak can and do speak any language we choose to learn. It's really a sad state of affairs that Black people themselves are astounded by other Blacks, like myself and DMB and even this guy (in video) when we not only speak one other language than our native English, but several languages. Wake up Black America.
