New Music

One of the best Alternative black artists out there has a second album on the horizon. Her name is Res and she is just what we need right now.

This brother, this brother and these brothers have each written about the need for a new direction in African-American music. I also think that mainstream media needs to show a deeper appreciation for other forms of African-American music and artists besides the "Tomfoolery" that is seen daily on MTV and BET.

The first video below is from a very talented artist by the name of RES who came on the scene at around the same time as Jill Scott and India Irie. Although Scott and Irie gained a wide audience, received some mainstream attention, and sold a decent number of records, Res was not as lucky(MTV feautred her videos). It seems that the only black rock musician who can currently get mainstream play and sell records is Lenny Kravitz.

James Spooner made a very good documentary on the history of black people in the rock and punk movement. See the trailer for his first film, Afro Punk here and the trailer for his newer film here. Here is a sniped of an interview with Spooner.

Below is the newest video by Res.

The second video is by an artist who was feautred in Afropunk, Tamar Kali.

I really like Res and have been waiting forever for a new CD from her. I loved the two songs she leaked on her MySpace awhile back.

I love Res, and I'm so glad to see her back with some new stuff. I loved the leaked MySpace stuff as well.

Res is bomb ass. About time she made her come back! I was getting sick of listening to her debut CD. Actually I'm not sick of it... just saying... glad to see her back. As far as Afro-punk. One would have to look to Bad Brains to see the epitome of hardcore afro-punkers! And don't get me started on Skunk Anansie...
Lenny Kravitz is played.

P.S. Actually only the lead singer of Skunk Anansie is black, but still. She rocks it.

I bought Res's first album and love it still! I swear it got me through my second year of law school. lol!

Good to see she is still around and making quality music. I hope her label will push her. There is definitely room for a funky black girl in the world of rock/alternative.

I'm off to dust off her album and chill. Well, maybe not, what with my 3 kids running everywhere...
lol!
